AquaCam HDX - Frequently Asked Questions

1. Will my camcorder fit and function in an AquaCam HDX Video/Camcorder Housing?
2. Where are the Mechanical and Electronic controls located?
3. Do I need video lights?
4. Will the AquaCam HDX accept video lights if I choose to use them?
5. Why are your prices lower?

1. Will my camcorder fit and function in an AquaCam HDX Video/Camcorder Housing?

The AquaCam HDX video housings are universal, which means they will accept most camcorders -- virtually all current models and most older models. Camcorder compatibility is entirely based on the size of your camcorder and has nothing to do with the make and model. The smaller your camcorder is, the better it will fit and function. We generally provide shorter housing lengths for smaller camcorders (down to 6 inches/152mm). Go to Camcorder Compatibility page to determine if your camcorder will fit in the AquaCam HDX video housings.

The optional Mechanical control system is user-adjustable and will manipulate the Record Start/Stop button on any camcorder with a right-hand-thumb record button location.

The optional Electronic control system is compatible with any Sony (or Canon) camcorders equipped with a A/V-Remote, LANC. or Remote jack.

2. Where are the Mechanical and Electronic controls located?

The Mechanical Control push-button is mounted on the top at the back end of the housing. This unique, universal control must be mounted at the back end because it extends far inside the housing and would interfere with the camcorders if mounted in other forward locations. When shooting underwater with a neutrally buoyant housing, the mechanical control is very easy to use. You simply remove one hand from one of the handles and reach back to momentarily push the record start/stop control button -- the AquaCam EX video housing can be securely held with one hand when underwater.

The Electronic Control system uses a four-position magnetic joystick control with a magnetic switch box and control circuit that is mounted on the inside of the housing opposite the joystick. A cable from the control circuit connects to the camcorder's LANC Interface. The joystick control is generally mounted on the side of the housing forward of the right handle. This location provides fingertip control without having to remove your hand from the handle.

3. Do I need video lights?

Video lights are Not necessary during the daytime under most shooting conditions. They are necessary for night dives and cave diving, etc. Please go to Underwater Shooting Tips page for complete information on lighting and underwater color correction.

4. Will the AquaCam HDX accept video lights if I choose to use them?

Yes. Go to divelight.com for a video light system that many of our customers have used and highly recommend. This system has a battery pack that is strapped to the underside of the housing and two light arms that extend from the pack. Alternatively, the outer shell of a standard AquaCam HDX Housing (with standard 0.5 inch/12mm thick shell) provides a thick mounting surface that can be drilled and screwed into. Various light arms that have some type of flanged mounting area/plate that will accept screws (or that can be modified to accept screws) can be mounted to the outer shell wall of the housing. If you provide a suitable, mountable light system, we can mount it for you at No charge!

If you are a confident DIY person, you could easily do this yourself. Please contact us if you have any questions or need assistance. Shallow screw holes must be drilled into the shell wall according to the light arm and desired mounting location on the shell. We recommend machine screws with about a 1/8-inch (3mm) thread-diameter and a thread-length from 1/4-inch (6mm) to 3/8-inch (9mm) maximum. The hole-depth should not exceed 5/16-inch (8mm) - use a depth-stop on drill bit to limit the depth!

5. Why are your prices lower?

Our pricing is primarily based on our actual parts, labor, and administrative costs, coupled with a reasonable profit margin. If we can produce a product at a lower cost, we can sell it for a lower price. In addition, we sell at Factory-Direct prices, without a retail price markup - there is no "middle man."

Our lower, competitive pricing is primarily due to the efficient design and manufacturing of our products. Parts costs are reduced by maximizing the use of standard parts, rather than using expensive custom-fabricated parts. Labor costs are reduced by a simplified and streamlined fabrication process. Overhead and administrative expenses are always evaluated and minimized when possible.

Because of these cost-saving efforts, we have not had to increase our prices over the past 10 years, and have recently had a price-reduction on our new AquaCam HDX Video Housings. Our goal is to offer the best value to our customers.
